The guruti or gurusi seen in temples today is a modified form of animal sacrifice or kuruti which was practiced in ancient times.

It is believed that Guruti Pujas were performed in South India even before the arrival of Aryans. Guruthi is considered as one of the pujas performed in Kerala for Anarya deities.
The first step of Guruti is to draw a Kolam in the temple yard, then in the middle of this Kolam, place the Kolam made of banana leaves and banana leaves, and place lamps on top of it. Later, Gurutikalam is prepared by preparing rolls filled with turmeric and lime, decorated with kurutholas and next to torches and lamps. A large number of burning torches are kept here. The numbers 8, 16 and 64 are used for this. The ball in the middle is the ball of gravity. It is decorated with coconut flowers and garlands.
There is a ritual of placing kumpalangas near this panth and cutting these kumpalangas at the end of Guruthi Puja. Along with this, red-colored water mixed with turmeric and lime is poured on the ground. Guruti was performed not only in Hindu pujas but in many other religions, Guruti was performed with rituals. According to the Qur’an, Ibrahim tried to sacrifice his son as commanded by Allah. But there is a story that later an angel appeared and advised him to give a goat instead and Ibrahim obeyed.
